Cape Haze Resort - Last Minute Special

Most everyone who owns a place at Cape Haze Resort either uses it themselves during the winter, or rents it out by the month. Weekly rental opportunities in February at Cape Haze Resort or anywhere on the Cape Haze Peninsula are very hard to come by in February and March.

Due to a cancellation, we have a last minute special available at Cape Haze Resort. We normally rent our unit for $1000 per week in February and March. Our unit is now available for only $800 per week for the period beginning January 28th through February 11. We will consider either one week or two week rental. No pets and no smoking.

Cape Haze Resort is beautifully located just across from the intra coastal waterway, within walking distance to Don Pedro State Park. We are 3 minutes from Boca Grande, and about 10 minutes to the Englewood beaches. The ferry to Palm Island is about 3 minutes from the front door of our Cape Haze Resort unit.

The amenities that Cape Haze Resort offers includes a resort style pool, a private fitness room, and clubhouse. We are one of the few properties in the Englewood - Cape Haze - Placida area that has boat and trailer parking for guests, right on the Cape Haze Resort property.

Cape Haze Resort Winter Getaway

Yesterday I received a call from a friend who wanted to spend a few weeks at Cape Haze Resort this winter. He finds Cape Haze Resort convenient because he keeps his boat in the water at Gasparilla Marina which is less than 5 minutes from Cape Haze Resort.

The waters of Lemon Bay, Turtle Bay and Charlotte Harbor are beautiful this time of year, and the fishing is great as well. However, any of the traditional hotels and motels are about a 45 minute drive. When on vacation, nobody wants to make a 45 minute drive several times a day, when they can stay at a great resort condominium just a few minutes from the water. Cape Haze Resort is located just across from the Intra Coastal Waterway within a short walk to Don Pedro State Park.

Most all of the resort condominium rentals in the Cape Haze, Gasparilla area have a minimum one month vacation rental. I rent my unit out by the week during peak season, and we have the following weeks still available:
January 28th 2012 through February 11th 2012
February 25th through March 10th 2012
Several weeks are available after March 17th.

Kayak Coral Creek

I have been visiting the Cape Haze florida peninsula for many years, and I continue to be amazed at how beautiful the place is. Last year I went kayaking for the first time. Since then, Bobby purchased his own kayak. Since I do not have my own, yesterday we drove three minutes from our Cape Haze Resort condo over to Grande Tours Kayak Center at 12575 Placida Road, Placida, Florida http://www.grandetours.com where I was able to rent a kayak and put in. The rental was $25 for the first two hours and $5 per hour thereafter. They charged Bobby $6 to launch.

We did not get there until 2 pm. High tide was scheduled at 3 pm, so we decided to head north into Coral Creek rather than go into Gasparilla Sound. The plan was to paddle for a while then do some fishing, so I made sure my Kayak rental was equipped for fishing poles. Generally we like to use artificial lures, but I had some live shrimp, so as soon as we hit the water, I put shrimp on the line and cast along the mangroves and piers. I caught nothing but a few pin fish.

Heading upstream, we had the wind at our backs, so the paddling was pretty easy. Beauty everywhere. Coral Creek has mangroves, sea grass, and lots of cuts and small islands. Along one of the shores, we passed Coral Creek Golf course and then continued back into the wilderness.

Since we needed to be back by 4:30, it seems that no sooner did we start, that it was time to turn around and head back. Now we were paddling against the wind, but with the current. Any time you get on the water here is time well spent. Later in the week if we get a day that is not so windy, I am going to get started first thing in the morning and explore Coral Creek by kayak with my camera. Two and a half hours was not enough time.

Cape Haze Resort Condo Association

I am pleased to announce that I have been elected to the board of directors for the Cape Haze Resort condominium association as the developer prepares to tranfer the HOA over to the private owners of the 144 condominium units at Cape Haze Resort. More importantly, it has been reported that the Cape Haze Resort property in Cape Haze Florida, is leading the way back from the real estate problems that southwest Florida and the rest of the nation has dealt with over the past few years.

Aprroximately 30 units have been sold to individual owners over the past 18 months at bargain prices, and the developer reports that only a few units remain. Most of the remaining Cape Haze Resort units are already under contract. Moreover, the developer is already talking about his plans to begin construction of an additonal 144 Cape Haze Resort units, once some of the other Placida Road inventory clears over the next couple of years.

Cape Haze remains a wonderful mix of year round residences and vacation rental owners. The luxury pool and clubhouse, as well as the grounds are all in tip-top shape, and the tarpon fishermen are once again grabbing up any remaining Cape Haze Resort vacation rentals for May and June as they prepare for the highly publicized Boca Grande Pass tarpon tournaments. We are already seeing an increase in advance winter bookings for the 2011 season, with many owners requiring a minimum of two months as prices edge upward from the 2010 winter rates.

Tarpon fishermen arive in Cape Haze

Just as the birds and fish migration patterns are predictable, so too are the migration patterns of the famed Tampa Bay Tarpon tournament fisherman. Each May the profession fishing guides from Tampa begin to join the local Charlotte Harbor fishermen and others from around the globe to fish the exciting and potentially lucrative Tarpon Tournaments of Boca Grande Pass.

We have a dozen Cape Haze Resort owner units booked to the fishermen from the Tampa teams who love the convenience and luxury of Cape Haze Resort because the resort has a special parking lot for our guests boats and trailers, and because we are only three minutes from Eldred's boat ramp.

For all of the lousy winter weather, Southwest Florida could not be more pleasant than it is this first week of May. The sun it out, but not too hot. The breeze is fresh and not too humid. I fished Placida pier yesterday and also fished along one of the walls on some Cape Haze property on the Intra-coastal waterway. We did not have much luck, but we did land a small flounder, which has been a rare catch for us for the past several years.

Palm Island Resort - Cape Haze Florida

Located on Lemon Bay in Cape Haze Florida, Palm Island is is a special kind of island. With seven miles of pristine beach on the Gulf of Mexico, you will find many species of birds, turtles, fish calling this place home.  For those unfamiliar with this less developed part of southwest Florida, we are just a few minutes from Boca Grande with the closest "city" being Englewood, Florida.

What really differentiates Palm Island from other Florida islands, is that it has no land bridge.  The only way to get on the island is by private boat or ferry. The Palm Island ferry runs continuously from early morning to late evening, and it only takes a few minutes to cross the Intra-coastal waterway, but it is just enough of an inconvenience to keep the island exclusive and lightly populated.

At the north end of the island you will find Palm Island Resort. Palm Island Resort is unique. Guests stay in two and three bedroom beach villas and beach cottages. Every unit faces the beach and most enjoy spectacular views of the ever changing beach. Each small cluster of villas has its own pool, so even during the busy winter season, you often have the pool almost to yourselves. A jacuzzi grilling area is also in the vicinity of each pool. Tennis courts are also available.

The most common mode of transportation on the shell roads of Palm Island Resort is by foot or bicycle, but many guests also own or rent golf carts from the resort so that exploring the islands secret spots is a bit easier. Bell service is also available to take you around the resort in the big golf cart, to drop you off at Rum Bay restaurant, or take you to Stump Pass.

Rum Bay Restaurant and its small general store and bar is the only commercial establishment on the island. The Rum Bay menu is island casual and reasonably priced. Daily early bird specials include two-for-one pork ribs that are out of this world. My favorite lunch at Rum Bay restaurant is the Grouper sandwich. The Key Lime pie is in the traditional Florida tradition.

For those who enjoy fishing, you can fish from any of several docks on the intra-coastal waterway, or fish in the surf directly in front of your condo. My favorite spot is at the tip of the island at Stump Pass where you will usually find porpoise playing in the water, Manatee slowly cruising along, Osprey high on a perch, and Great Blue Herons waiting for a handout from the fishermen. Stump Pass is a great place to idle away hours. Here, where the waters of Lemon Bay empty into the Gulf of Mexico, the tides are quite evident. Bait follows the tides, and game fish follow the bait. Cast a live shrimp or artificial lure into the pass, and you never know what might end up on the line.

For most, spending time on Palm Island is a rotation between walking the beach, cooling off in the pool, and occasional bicycle rides, and fishing excursions.

At the other end of the island lies Don Pedro State park beach which is only accessible by private boat.

In between Palm Island Resort and the Ferry, lies several miles of roads that meander around the lagoons which are flow into the intra-coastal waterway. These private vacation rental homes do not offer the resort amenities of Palm Island Resort, but do offer the peace and tranquility of island living. Here you will find several hundred homes, some with beach front and some with lagoon frontage. A few even both beach front and backwater frontage.

Cape Haze vacation rentals and Cape Haze hotels

Privately owned vacation rental homes and condominiums are different from hotels in several important ways. Privately owned vacation rental homes and condominiums are generally much more spacious than hotel rooms. The privately owned vacation rental generally includes a fully equipped kitchen, and one or more bedrooms that are separate from a family room. The owner of the vacation rental typically equips the home or condo with more comforts of home. You may find books, videos, sports equipment, games, or whatever the owner decides to leave in the unit for their guests to enjoy

Another important difference, is that the vacation rental owner must hire a cleaning service to do the bedding, clean the dishes, and make the unit ready for the next guest. This generally take a profession several hours, so the owner must pay anywhere from $50 to $150 or more to service their home or condo after the guests leave. Owners who care about maintaining the highest level of comfort for their guest will use a professional cleaning service with high standards. This cost is typically passed on to the vacation renter.

For this reason, when you request a rental of only one or a few days, you will typically still have a cleaning fee to be added onto the cost of your stay. Accordingly, traditional hotels often represent better value for stays of only one or two nights. Protect your Cape Haze vacation with trip cancellation insurance

This past winter we had a very good customer book our Cape Haze Resort unit for ten weeks in the winter from January 15 through the end of March. At the last minute, there was an illness that caused our guest to cancel the trip about two weeks prior to the scheduled arrival date. Fortunately, we had received many requests for Cape Haze Resort and we were able to fill most of those ten weeks. Happily, I was able to refund all of the money to my customer except for a small portion due to a few lost days and increased cleaning costs.

Last year I had only one vacation rental unit at Cape Haze Resort. Now we have about 20 units in the Cape Haze Peninsula area. I am concerned that our longer term guests staying a month or more, might not be able to sustain a loss should they need to cancel their trip. Recently I began investigating trip cancellation insurance, so that if this ever happens again, we will be better prepared.

I found a company called Access America. I have not used them yet, but they seem to be very reasonable. For example, my guest can protect themselves in case they need to cancel their trip due to a number of reasons. A basic plan from Acess America pays out the loss due to the non-refundable portion of the trip in the event of death of a family member, death of the insured, terrorism, illness of a family member, illness of the insured, illness of traveling companion, injury of family member, jury or supoena and several other conditions. They call this plan their Basic plan. The typical cost to insure up to $1000 under the basic plan is only $72. The premium to insure up to $2000 of non-refundable deposits is only $116.

Access America also has a Classic and a Deluxe plan that pays out for other cancellation reasons such as work related reasons, pregnancy, traffic accident, legal separation or divorce, military obligations and more.

Cape Haze Resort starting to book for 2011

Cape Haze Resort consists of 144 units located on the Cape Haze Peninsula on Placida road in Cape Haze, just across from Don Pedro State Park. These privately owned luxury vacation rental condominiums represent some of the best values in Cape Haze. Cape Haze Resort is leading the real estate market back to viability in Cape Haze. As the developer prepares to turn the homeowner's association over to the individual property owners this summer, they have been aggressively selling the remaining developer owned units and report that they are now down to only eight developer owned units.

It is expected that these remaining units will be gone by the end of April 2010, so owners can expect to see their property values begin to increase once the supply of heavily discounted units is gone from the market.

Even though the weather was on the cool side this past winter, just about every available vacation rental unit had rental guests. We could have personally filled a dozen more Cape Haze Resort units in February and March, so please think ahead for 2011. As we approach the Tarpon Fishing season, we are once again rapidly filling the units with Fishing Guides and tournament fisherman coming down from Tampa and elsewhere in Florida and around the country. While tarpon fishing remains strong late into the summer, the tournaments are filling our Cape Haze Resort owner units for May and June.

Today would be a very good time to start booking for winter 2011 as we are already taking inquiries every day. We are giving priority to prospective guests who want to arrive in late December or early January, since we always run out of availability for February and March. Now that the housing market (at least at Cape Haze Resort) is starting to stabilize, owners are once again being more selective and looking at minimum winter rentals of one month.

Cape Haze Resort is a great place to plan your summer vacation. Once Tarpon tournament season winds down, we will be able to offer some special deals on weekly rentals.
